Kitchen Chemistry

Ready to become a scientist? Complete these fun (and tasty) experiments in your own kitchen!

Experiment 1: Make a Volcano Cake

Bake a simple cake and shape it like a volcano. For the 'lava', mix baking soda into red food coloring and place it in a small hole at the top. When you're ready for the eruption, pour in some vinegar and watch it fizz! This shows a classic acid-base reaction.

Experiment 2: Grow Sugar Crystals

Create your own rock candy! Boil water and dissolve as much sugar as you can into it to create a 'supersaturated solution'. Pour the solution into a jar, hang a string into it, and wait. Over a few days, you'll see crystals grow as the water evaporates. This demonstrates crystallization.

Experiment 3: Build a Lemon Battery

With adult help, you can power a small LED light with a lemon! You'll need a lemon, a copper coin, and a zinc-coated nail. The acid in the lemon creates a chemical reaction with the two different metals, generating a small amount of electricity.
